Where is a sea burial possible?

In Germany, sea burials are permitted in designated areas of the North and Baltic Seas, outside the three-mile zone. The burial takes place from a ship departing from a German port.

Burials in the Atlantic or Mediterranean Sea are also possible. In inland waters, sea burials are generally not permitted, with a few exceptions in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Unattended or accompanied sea burial?

You can choose between an accompanied and an unattended sea burial.

In the accompanied form, relatives participate in the journey. The captain gives a speech, the urn is ceremoniously committed to the sea, and a memorial service takes place upon request.

In the unattended sea burial, the captain carries out the interment without relatives present. It is simpler and usually more cost-effective. In both cases, relatives receive a nautical chart with the exact coordinates of the burial.

Collection of the deceased

We collect the deceased person around the clock – from their home, a hospital, nursing home, or hospice. Subsequently, our experienced regional partners ensure a dignified transfer to a local crematorium.

Reporting the death & applying for certificates

We report the death to the registry office and apply for the death certificates on your behalf. We will inform you in advance which documents we require from you, depending on the marital status.

Once approved, we coordinate the cremation and handle all necessary paperwork. Afterwards, we transfer the urn to your chosen location – be it a cemetery, a burial forest, or a port for a sea burial.

5

Interment at your preferred location

Depending on the type of funeral, we organize the interment locally or in the surrounding area. Upon request, we can also plan the farewell ceremony – personalized and tailored to your wishes.

6

Using the death certificates, we manage the deregistration with health and pension insurance. For married individuals, we also apply for the survivor's pension for the surviving partner.

Requirements: Cremation, sea urn, and permit

It always requires cremation, as the ashes are interred, not a coffin. Only a water-soluble sea urn is used, as prescribed by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.

Additionally, an official permit is required. It is usually granted if the sea burial corresponds to the wishes of the deceased. We will take care of the permits for you.
