Thank you Mrs. Haan, I was unable to arrange for my beloved husband's funeral elsewhere. What all that happens to you and what you have to manage. Suddenly you're all alone but thanks to Mrs. Haan, I've overcome the hardest time of my life. The funeral service was very emotional and thanks also for The Funeral Speaker. My laundering after the resting place was also
fulfilled. You can't thank them enough as sensitively as they were for me during this difficult time.
Much love to you.

What matters to us

Personalized support

Everyone has different needs during a time of grief. We want to address these and support you in a way that works for you. What do we mean by that? Contrary to popular belief, not everything has to be decided immediately. For example, you can decide a week or two after the death which cemetery to choose, whether you prefer a forest or sea burial, or if you would like a funeral service. The same applies to many other decisions. We will guide you step by step and help you make the necessary decisions at the right time. You can find more examples of our personalized support here.

Transparent fixed prices

It is important to us to support you with simple and fair pricing. That is why we work with straightforward fixed prices that include all standard funeral home services. The only additional costs are for the burial site. These costs vary significantly depending on the cemetery and the type of burial (e.g., burial at sea or forest burial). We would be happy to advise you on this. If you have additional requests beyond our service packages, such as a viewing with an open casket or a candle ritual during the funeral service, we will gladly arrange these for you as well. You can find our prices here.

Your companion in Berlin

Christina Haan
Attendant

I am Christina and I am a companion at Memovida. I was able to gain my entry into the funeral industry and my previous experience in a traditional house in Hamburg. My training as a grief counselor and my (ongoing) continuing education as a death beam have taught me to think beyond the last breath. In my work, it is important to me to take pressure and stress away from families and loved ones. It is important to me to convey that we have time to make decisions and to arrange a coherent and appropriate farewell together. Even after my support has ended, I am still there for families and loved ones.

Cremation and anonymous burial options in Berlin

Cremation is a common form of funeral in Berlin. After cremation, the urn may be buried in different ways, including an urn grave, lawn grave, columbarium, tree grave or communal grave. Several cemeteries in Berlin and nearby districts provide suitable options for urn burials.

Anonymous burial is usually the most affordable form of cremation because it requires no individually assigned grave, involves less maintenance and often includes a reduced ceremony. At Memovida in Berlin, our transparent fixed-price packages are Paket FEUER at €2,550 and Paket ANONYM at €1,900.

For example, the following cemeteries in Berlin offer urn or anonymous burial options:

  • Parkfriedhof Neukölln, Buckower Damm 148, 12349 Berlin: Urn graves, tree burials without individual marking and communal urn graves are available. The park-like cemetery covers 17.5 hectares and has parking behind the ceremony halls.
  • Landschaftsfriedhof Gatow, Maximilian-Kolbe-Straße 6, 14089 Berlin: This quiet, park-like cemetery offers urn graves, anonymous communal urn graves and ash communal graves. Its open landscape covers around 14 hectares, with a visitor car park behind the entrance.

We are here to guide you with care through every organisational step of a cremation or anonymous burial in Berlin.

Places for a tree burial in and around Berlin

Tree burials are available in several designated woodland cemeteries surrounding Berlin, mainly in the Brandenburg countryside to the north, south and east of the city. These locations combine a peaceful natural setting with reasonable access from the Berlin metropolitan area.

A tree burial offers a quiet, natural place of remembrance where the surrounding woodland can provide comfort over many years. Memovida supports families with the organisation and planning of the funeral, helping to arrange each step with care and sensitivity.

Earth Burial in Berlin from €3,300

Memovida Bestattungen organises respectful earth burials in Berlin with the ERDE package from €3,300, excluding cemetery fees. The transparent fixed price includes personal advice by telephone or at our office, collection throughout Berlin and the surrounding area, care and dressing of the deceased, a coffin from our selection, cooling, all necessary registrations, coordination with the cemetery, death certificates, and support with official notifications. Earth burials are possible at many Berlin cemeteries, including Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof, Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf, and the cemetery of St. Matthäus in Schöneberg. We also explain cemetery fees, grave options, and any additional costs clearly. Visit us at Kollwitzstraße 91, 10435 Berlin, or call us to arrange the ceremony together.

Specific Funeral Process in Berlin

A funeral in Berlin follows clear procedures and legal requirements. To help you prepare, here is an overview of the most important steps:

  1. Report the Death: In the event of a death, a doctor must issue the medical certificate of death.
  2. Appoint a Funeral Director: Memovida takes care of organising and planning the funeral according to your wishes.
  3. Provide the Required Documents: These include, among other things, the death certificate, the deceased person’s identity card, and the birth or marriage certificate.
  4. Transfer and Care of the Deceased: The deceased person is respectfully transferred to a refrigerated facility or crematorium.
  5. Choose the Type of Funeral: Together, we decide on the desired form of funeral.
  6. Arrange the Date with the Cemetery or Burial Location: Alternative options such as sea burials or woodland burials can also be organised.
  7. Conduct the Funeral Service: If desired, with a celebrant, music, and an individually arranged ceremony.
  8. Burial: The final farewell takes place.

Depending on the type of funeral, specific regulations apply, such as statutory grave rest periods, which vary depending on the type of grave.

Memovida organises the funeral for families living in these districts and takes responsibility for the arrangements connected with the death.

Friedhöfe in Berlin im Überblick

The Waldfriedhof Heerstraße is located in the Westend district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Stadium. Spanning approximately 15 hectares, this park and forest cemetery features a unique terraced layout around Lake Sausuhlensee and is considered one of Berlin's significant garden monuments. The listed funeral hall, dating from the early 1920s, provides a dignified setting for farewell ceremonies and memorial services. Visiting hours vary by season: during the summer months from April to September, the cemetery is generally open from 7 AM to 8 PM, and in the winter months from October to March, from 8 AM to 6 PM. Its tranquil, natural atmosphere with old trees makes this a protected resting place for relatives and visitors.

The Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde is located in the Lichtenberg district on Gudrunstraße and, covering approximately 32 hectares, is one of Berlin's largest cemeteries. Established in 1881 with park-like designs, the site is also widely known as the "Socialist Cemetery" and combines cultural-historical significance with an expansive, green character that invites quiet strolls and peaceful contemplation. A historic ceremonial hall is available for memorial services, and various burial forms, such as earth burials and urn interments, are offered. Opening hours are staggered seasonally: from February to November, the cemetery is generally accessible from 7:30 AM, and in December and January from 8 AM, in both cases until dusk.

The Waldfriedhof Zehlendorf is located in the Nikolassee district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf on Wasgensteig and, covering approximately 37.5 hectares, is the largest state-owned cemetery in this district. It was established from 1945 onwards within an existing pine forest, creating a harmonious landscape where graves and forest merge, radiating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere every day of the year. The modern ceremonial halls, with their large glass fronts, offer views of the surrounding forest, providing a dignified setting for farewells. Additionally, the Memoriam Garden, established in 2018, offers well-maintained, low-maintenance grave sites within a garden-like area. Visiting hours vary by season and typically extend from early morning until dusk.

The Cemetery of the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder Parishes, usually referred to simply as Dorotheenstadt Cemetery, is located in the Mitte district at Chausseestraße 126, not far from the Oranienburger Tor U-Bahn station. The approximately 1.7-hectare site, which is entirely a protected monument, was founded in 1762 and is one of the city's most culturally and historically significant burial grounds, characterized by artfully designed gravestones spanning several centuries. A funeral chapel from the period of its reopening in the 1920s is available for farewell ceremonies; urn interments are still possible today, and earth burial plots under certain conditions. Opening hours are staggered seasonally: daily from 8 AM to 4 PM in the winter months of January and December, extended in spring and autumn, and until 8 PM in the summer months of May to August.

The Old St. Matthew's Churchyard is located on Großgörschenstraße in the Schöneberg district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, not far from Yorckstraße station, and captivates with its picturesque hillside location spanning approximately 50,000 square meters. Inaugurated in 1856, the cemetery is one of Berlin's most culturally and historically significant sites, known for its elaborately designed wall graves, mausoleums, and numerous honorary graves of the State of Berlin. Various forms of burial are possible in the churchyard, including earth and urn interments, tree burials, and a columbarium with an urn wall. The chapel and the small cemetery café in the former administrator's house create a lively yet respectful atmosphere, making the site a cherished setting for farewells. Visiting hours are seasonal, typically from 8 AM until the early evening, extending until 8 PM in the summer months of May to August.

Funeral law in Berlin: the most important next steps

The Berlin Burial Act sets out what must be observed from the moment of death until the interment. For relatives, the following rules are particularly relevant:

  • Post-mortem examination and registration. After the medical examination, the death certificate is issued. The registry office then registers the death.
  • No mandatory waiting period. Berlin law does not set a minimum number of hours. However, the responsible authority may order a waiting period to protect against infection.
  • Transfer within 36 hours. All rooms approved by the district office count as mortuaries, including facilities in hospitals, cemeteries, crematoria and funeral homes.
  • Second post-mortem examination before every cremation. This examination usually takes place at the crematorium and is carried out by the State Institute for Forensic and Social Medicine.
  • Six months for the urn. The ashes must be interred within this period. This leaves time to choose a suitable grave calmly.
  • Shroud burial possible. In Berlin, a burial without a coffin is also possible for religious reasons.

We report the death, coordinate the second examination with the crematorium and arrange the grave with the cemetery administration.

Memovida supports people in Berlin through bereavement in a modern, fair and personal way.

Legal basis: Berlin Act on Corpses and Burials (Gesetz über das Leichen- und Bestattungswesen).

As of: September 2026. In individual cases, the responsible authority decides. Feel free to call us, and we will clarify which rules apply to your situation.
