In Düsseldorf, as in the whole of Germany, there are specific legal requirements for cremations. Cremation is only permitted in an approved crematorium, and there is a so-called “cemetery obligation,” which means that the ashes must be buried in an urn in a cemetery or a specially designated burial place. The legal waiting period before cremation in North Rhine-Westphalia is at least 48 hours. In addition, a second morgue by a medical officer is required to rule out any doubt as to the cause of death.
The order of persons entitled to burial is regulated by law. Spouses or registered partners may order a funeral as a matter of priority, followed by adult children, parents, siblings and other close relatives.
An anonymous cremation means that the urn is buried without identification. This form of burial often takes place in a communal field of a cemetery, although the exact grave location is not disclosed to the relatives.
