The Hauptfriedhof Frankfurt (main cemetery, Eckenheimer Landstraße 194, 60320 Frankfurt am Main) opened on 1 July 1828 to plans by the city gardener Sebastian Rinz in the style of an English landscape park and has grown from originally 5.6 to around 70 hectares. With about 65,500 grave sites it is the largest cemetery in the city; the funeral hall seats 150. The options include earth and urn choice graves, urn chambers, lawn graves, gardener-maintained graves and a Muslim burial section. For older visitors and those with limited mobility, a free cemetery taxi runs Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 3 pm; the U5 underground line stops at Hauptfriedhof. The Südfriedhof (Darmstädter Landstraße 229, 60598 Frankfurt am Main) in Sachsenhausen opened in 1868 and covers around 13 hectares with about 12,200 grave sites. The funeral hall holds 120 guests. Earth and urn choice graves, lawn urn graves with a central place for flowers and earth and urn row graves are available. Bus lines 30 and 36 stop at Südfriedhof West. The Parkfriedhof Heiligenstock (Friedberger Landstraße 647, 60389 Frankfurt am Main) in the north-east of the city covers around 17.4 hectares with about 10,200 grave sites and a funeral hall seating 150. Besides classic choice and row graves and a Muslim burial section, there is a memorial grove (Trauerhain): urns are buried at trees, the area remains natural and is not decorated or planted, and choice graves may be marked with a ground-level grave plate. The Westhausen cemetery (Kollwitzstraße 27, 60488 Frankfurt am Main), with around 22.2 hectares and about 11,400 grave sites, is one of the large cemeteries in the city; the funeral hall seats 100. In the memorial grove, urn choice and urn row graves at trees are possible, row graves with a shared memorial stone for name plates. The 3.6-hectare “Cimitero di Guerra Italiano” has been the resting place of 4,788 Italian war victims since 1957; it is one of five honorary cemeteries of this kind in Germany.
