Cremation is a contemporary and increasingly popular form of burial that enables a dignified farewell. For relatives, the urn offers a place of remembrance — whether in a classic urn grave, a columbarium or at a natural burial, for example under a tree. In Berlin, there are many ways to design a cremation individually and sensitively.

Cremation usually begins with a funeral service, which is held either before cremation with the coffin or after cremation with the urn. This ceremony often takes place in a cemetery chapel, a church, or an individually chosen room. Music, personal speeches and symbolic acts such as lighting candles or laying down flowers can add a personal touch to the celebration.
In Germany, cremation always takes place in a coffin. This means that the deceased person is always first buried in a coffin, even if the funeral service is only planned after cremation. Cremation is carried out in compliance with strict legal requirements and the highest standards. After cremation, the ashes are kept in an urn, which is later buried in a cemetery, in a columbarium or in natural areas. The burial of the urn can also be combined with a farewell ceremony, during which poems, prayers or personal words are recited.

Cremation is a contemporary and increasingly popular form of burial that enables a dignified farewell. In Cologne, there are many ways to design a cremation individually and sensitively.
In Germany, cremation is subject to strict legal requirements, which also apply in Cologne. A central aspect is the so-called cemetery obligation, which requires that the ashes of the deceased must be buried in a cemetery. This means that keeping the urn at home or scattering the ashes in nature is not allowed.
Before cremation, a second medical examination, the so-called second morgue, is required. This is carried out by a medical officer or forensic doctor to confirm the identity of the deceased and to verify the cause of death. This measure is for safety and ensures that there is no doubt as to the circumstances of the death.
Cremation may be ordered either by a written declaration of intent by the deceased during his lifetime or, if there is no such declaration, by the next of kin. In this case, relatives must confirm the request for cremation in writing.
To carry out a cremation, certain documents are required:
There are various forms of cremation available in Cologne, which meet the individual wishes of the deceased and their relatives.
In anonymous cremation, the urn is buried on specially designed lawns, without individual grave marks. A joint memorial commemorates those buried there. This form of burial is maintenance-free, as grave care is carried out by the cemetery administration. Personal memorial objects are not allowed here.
Modern concepts such as urn walls (columbaries) or memorial stones offer alternative burial options. In Cologne, for example, there is the Church of St. Bartholomew in Bickendorf, which serves as a columbarium and offers urn graves in a church setting.
The scattering of ashes is not allowed in Cologne due to the cemetery obligation. As an alternative, natural burials are available in designated areas of cemeteries, such as tree burials, where the urn is buried at the foot of a tree.
A brief overview of the differences between cremation and burial:
Modrne crematoria, such as the Cologne Crematorium, meet strict environmental requirements and are characterized by low energy consumption and low emissions. Cremations also enable space-saving and natural forms of burial, which reduce land use and contribute to the conservation of resources.
