In Germany, cremation is subject to strict legal requirements, which also apply in Cologne. A central aspect is the so-called cemetery obligation, which requires that the ashes of the deceased must be buried in a cemetery. This means that keeping the urn at home or scattering the ashes in nature is not allowed.
Before cremation, a second medical examination, the so-called second morgue, is required. This is carried out by a medical officer or forensic doctor to confirm the identity of the deceased and to verify the cause of death.
