What does a Buddhist burial mean?

Buddhism does not regard death as a final end, but as a transition to a new life cycle. The burial therefore has profound spiritual significance and is intended to help the deceased peacefully transition to the next life.

Buddhist burials are heavily influenced by the respective traditions and schools, but the cremation a central role. Prayers, recitations, and rituals accompany the process to positively influence the deceased's karma.

Death in Buddhism — A new beginning

In Buddhism, death is not seen as a final end, but as part of an ongoing cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (samsara). The goal is to finally achieve enlightenment (nirvana) and escape the cycle through good karma and spiritual development.

The moment of death is particularly significant, as the state of mind of the dying person influences the transition to the next life. That is why peace, compassion and prayers from relatives and Buddhist monks are essential.
