We will guide you step by step during this farewell and want to design it in the way that best suits you â whether traditional, modern or completely individual. Berlin offers various options for a dignified funeral â whether in a historic cemetery or in a natural environment. We'll help you make the right choice for you.
Our individual support: Everyone has different needs during the time of grief. We want you to know all your options and help you find the path that is best for YOU right now. Contrary to general assumption, not everything has to be decided immediately, for example. You can still decide in which cemetery you want to bury yourself 1-2 weeks after you die or whether you would like a celebration or not. You can find more examples of our individual support here.

We understand that every funeral is individual and will help you create a dignified and personal burial in Berlin. From choosing the cemetery to the ceremony, we will provide you with advice, action and ideas to make it possible for you to say goodbye that suits you and your loved ones.

The burial usually begins with a funeral service. In most cases, the ceremony takes place in a cemetery chapel or church. It can be enriched by music, personal speeches and symbolic acts, such as the laying of flowers or the blessing. The organization of this celebration can vary greatly depending on the faith, tradition or personal wishes of the deceased person and their relatives. It doesn't have to be quiet and grey anymore, but should suit you and the deceased person. We are happy to support you here with ideas.
After the funeral service, the coffin is accompanied to the grave by the mourning community. The actual burial takes place there, during which the coffin is lowered into the ground. A final greeting is often said at this point, a prayer is recited or a poem is recited. Many relatives find the farewell ritual of throwing the earth â in which soil or flowers are sprinkled on the coffin â as particularly connecting and comforting.
Cemetery fees: The fees for the grave depend on the respective cemetery and the location of the grave. Berlin has municipal and church cemeteries with different fee schedules. For a single grave site, the costs vary between 1,000 and 4,000 euros, depending on the desired duration (usually 20 to 30 years) and the size of the grave. We would be happy to help you find the right burial site for you
Subsequent costs: These include tombstone and inscription costs as well as long-term grave maintenance. Simple tombstones start at around 1,000 euros, while more elaborate designs can cost up to several thousand euros. The costs of grave maintenance also depend on the size and planting of the grave. They can be obtained from the responsible cemetery gardener.

Row graves are assigned in turn by the cemetery and have a fixed rest period of 20 years. It is not possible to extend the right of use. It is often possible to order grave maintenance for the entire duration immediately after the burial.
Election graves exist as single, double or family graves. Survivors can choose a grave site themselves within the available areas in the cemetery. The right of use can be extended after the 20-year rest period has ended. If further burials are carried out in an electoral grave, the right of use must be adjusted accordingly to ensure the prescribed rest period of the last person buried.
In the case of an anonymous burial, the burial takes place in a grave that is not individually marked. However, there is often a central memorial stone where relatives can lay flowers. Not all cemeteries in Berlin offer this form of burial.
A burial offers many people a sense of permanence and a permanent place of remembrance. Relatives can individually design and maintain the grave, which creates a personal connection. In addition, this form of burial often corresponds to traditional or religious ideas. There are various types of burial sites in Berlin, which can be chosen according to wishes and budget â from simple row graves to larger election burial sites for families.
The duration of a burial depends on various factors. It usually takes place a few days to a maximum of two weeks after the death, as the body is buried without cremation. The actual funeral service usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, followed by burial at the grave. After the burial, the rest period begins, which is usually 20 years in Berlin â but it can vary depending on the cemetery and type of grave.
