The costs of cremation in Berlin depend on various factors and consist of the following components:

Funeral expenses: These include services provided by the funeral home, such as the provision of a coffin for cremation, hygienic care and the organization of the funeral service. In Berlin, these costs range between 2,500 and 4,500 euros, depending on the scope of services. At Memovida, a cremation without a party costs 2,150€ as a full price.
Cremation costs: Cremation in a crematorium usually costs between 300 and 700 euros. With Memovida, cremation costs are already included in the funeral package.
Cemetery fees: These depend on the type of urn burial. The fees for an urn grave or columbarium compartment in Berlin range between 800 and 3,500 euros, depending on location and duration (usually 15 to 20 years).‍

Friedhofsgebühren: Die Gebühren für die Grabstätte sind vom jeweiligen Friedhof und der Lage des Grabes abhängig. In Berlin gibt es städtische und kirchliche Friedhöfe mit unterschiedlichen Gebührenordnungen. Für eine Einzelgrabstätte variieren die Kosten zwischen 1.000 und 4.000 Euro, abhängig von der gewünschten Laufzeit (in der Regel 20 bis 30 Jahre) und der Grabgröße. Gerne helfen wir Ihnen, die passende Grabstätte für Sie zu finden

Anschließende Kosten: Diese umfassen Leistungen Grabstein- und Inschriftenkosten sowie die langfristige Grabpflege. Einfache Grabsteine beginnen bei etwa 1.000 Euro, während aufwändigere Gestaltungen bis zu mehreren Tausend Euro kosten können. Auch die Kosten für die Grabpflege hängen von der Größe und Bepflanzung des Grabes ab. Sie können beim zuständigen Friedhofsgärtner erfragt werden.

Legal framework and regulations in Berlin

Cremation in Germany is subject to clear legal requirements, which are also strictly observed in Berlin. Important aspects include:

Friedhofszwang: The ashes must be buried in an official cemetery or an approved burial ground. Free Dispersion of Ashes is not allowed in Berlin.
Waiting time until cremation: At least 48 hours After death.
Second morgue: A medical officer checks the cause of death again before cremation.

Who can order a cremation?

The Order of Authorized Persons:

Spouses or registered partners
Kids
parents
Siblings
Other close relatives or people with a special personal connection

Documents required:

Death Certificate (issued by the registry office)
Cremation permit (by relatives or a notarial declaration of intent from the deceased)

Types of cremations and their peculiarities

Cremation offers various burial options:

Anonymous cremation: Burial in a community area without individual identification. Several cemeteries in Berlin offer this form. Important: Relatives are usually not allowed to be present.
Tree burial: The urn is buried at the roots of a tree. Possible in Berlin, for example on the Gruenau Forest Cemetery Or the Baumschulenweg cemetery.
Burial at sea: Burial in a water-soluble urn in the Baltic Sea or North Sea. Departure usually from Rostock or Travemünde. Requires approval
Columbarium burial: Storage of the urn in an urn wall with a name plate. In Berlin, among other things, possible on the Urnenfriedhof Gerichtstraße.
Ash Scattering: Not allowed in Berlin, but possible in special areas in Brandenburg or abroad.
