Cremation is a contemporary and increasingly popular form of burial that enables a dignified farewell. For relatives, the urn offers a place of remembrance â whether in a classic urn grave, a columbarium or at a natural burial, for example under a tree. In Berlin, there are many ways to design a cremation individually and sensitively.

Cremation usually begins with a funeral service, which is held either before cremation with the coffin or after cremation with the urn. This Ceremony Often Takes Place in a Cemetery Chapel, a Church, or an Individually Chosen Room. Music, personal speeches and symbolic acts such as lighting candles or laying down flowers can add a personal touch to the celebration.
In Germany, cremation always takes place in a coffin. This means that the deceased person is always first buried in a coffin, even if the funeral service is only planned after cremation. Cremation is carried out in compliance with strict legal requirements and to the highest standards. After cremation, the ashes are kept in an urn, which is later buried in a cemetery, in a columbarium or in natural areas. The Burial of the Urn can also be combined with a farewell ceremony, during which poems, prayers or personal words are recited.

Cremation is a contemporary and increasingly popular form of burial that enables a dignified farewell. For relatives, the urn offers a place of remembrance â whether in a classic urn grave, a columbarium or at a natural burial, for example under a tree. In Hamburg, there are many ways to design a cremation individually and sensitively.
There are specific legal requirements for cremations in Hamburg. Cremation may only be carried out after a second medical examination in order to establish the cause of death beyond doubt. There is also a so-called cemetery duty in Germany, which requires that the ashes of the deceased must be buried in a cemetery. Exceptions, such as sea burials, require special permission.
The order of cremation is usually the responsibility of the next of kin. The legal order of funeral beneficiaries is defined as follows in Hamburg:
Should the deceased have left a funeral order during his lifetime, this is binding and takes precedence over the wishes of the relatives.
The following documents are required to carry out a cremation in Hamburg:
If there is no declaration of intent, the next of kin can order cremation.
In the case of anonymous cremation, the urn is buried without individual identification of the grave site. In Hamburg, some cemeteries offer the opportunity for relatives to attend the anonymous burial.
In addition to traditional urn graves, modern forms of burial are gaining in importance. Urn walls, also known as columbaries, offer space for several urns and enable space-saving burial. Memorial stones or steles on community graves provide a central memorial for several deceased people.
In Hamburg, the scattering of ashes on public land is not permitted. Alternatively, sea burials can be carried out in the North Sea or Baltic Sea, subject to appropriate approval. In addition, some cemeteries offer special areas for natural burials, where the urn is buried under trees, for example.
Cremation has both positive and negative ecological effects. On the one hand, it enables space-saving burial and reduces land consumption in cemeteries. On the other hand, the cremation process consumes energy and causes COâ emissions. However, modern crematoria rely on energy-efficient technologies and filter systems to minimize environmental impact. In addition, biodegradable urns and natural forms of burial can increase environmental friendliness.
At Memovida, we are here to advise you on finding the right and environmentally friendly form of burial in Hamburg.
